After reading “On the Road” when she was only sixteen years old, Janine traveled to New York with the purpose of meeting some of the writers of the Beat Generation, which she achieved. In 1962 she traveled to Europe with her husband, the painter Fernando Vega. After his death by overdose in Ibiza in 1962, Janine wrote her first book, “Poems to Fernando”, which was published by City Lights.

One winter, she read all the works by Herman Hesse and Dostoyevsky, and Mount Analogue by French surrealist poet Rene Daumal. In her own words, after that, she began “to walk the streets at night, and imagine magical existences behind the lit-up windows”.

Après avoir lu “Sur la Route” quand elle avait seulement seize ans, Janine voyage pour New York avec comme objectif de rencontrer certains des écrivains de la Beat Generation. En 1962 elle voyagea pour l’Europe avec son mari, le peintre Fernando Vega.
